Wood Cutting

Trotec lasers excel at cutting and engraving wood for a variety of uses. They can be used for producing architectural models, inlays, gift items, ornaments and much more. Trotec laser cutting systems and engraving systems are well known for producing extremely clean edges with a smooth profile even when working with intricate designs.

The correct laser configuration can process almost any type of wood including thick pieces, laminates and MDF plates. Laser Cutting Wood - Advantages Over Conventional Methods:

Clean, smooth and exact edges, even with complicated profiles

Fast cutting speeds

Non-contact, tool-free process

Easy material handling

The "nesting" feature helps ensure economical use of materials

Cost-effective, even in small batch sizes

Laser cutting and laser engraving woods including plywood, MDF, balsa wood

Trotec lasers are perfect for wood engraving and laser cutting wood and timber. A Trotec laser can laser cut wood or laser engrave wood to create toys, decorative items, artistic craftwork, souvenirs, Christmas decorations, gifts, architectural models or for wood inlays. Laser engraving on wood produces some amazing results, and edges can be trimmed by laser cutting the wood.

How does laser wood cutting and laser engraving of wood work?

When using a laser to cut and engrave wood, it's important to have a high processing speed and clean edges. Wood cutting lasers from Trotec produce a clean laser cut and accurate edges, even when working on highly complex shapes and sizes. There is no difficult and time consuming cleaning process, as no chips are produced when cutting or engraving wood or timber with a Trotec laser.

How can wood and timber be laser cut or engraved?

There are many uses for laser cut wood or engraved wood. Personalization and individualization is important: text or lines applied to photo frames can increase their value; photographs or even logos can be replicated with incredible detail using a Trotec laser. Hot stamping with a die can't reproduce accurate detail and it isn't possible to switch to a different motif immediately. A Trotec laser provides extreme flexibility and the ability to refine woodwork in a very high quality finished product.

Does wood burn during laser cutting?

In the cutting clearance of wood, the laser produces a temperature increase higher than the evaporation temperature of wood. The "suddenly evaporated" (sublimated), wood is visible in the form of smoke. This smoke also transports the introduced heat (from the laser) away from the wood. Consequently, there is only a relatively low thermal stress on the material near the cutting clearance. By accurate focusing and selecting the appropriate optics and supplying compressed air, high-quality cuts on wood and timbers can be produced. The brown colour along the cutting edges can often be used in the design.

Can any type of wood be cut and engraved with the laser?

There are a number of types of wood and timber that can be laser cut or engraved. As wood is a natural material, various characteristics such as the density and resin content of the wood must be considered before lasering. Soft wood types like Balsa wood require a lower laser power and can be cut at a higher speed. Hard wood like Cedar wood requires a higher laser power. When working with MDF, which consists of glued wood fibers, Trotec recommends using compressed air to help faciliate the laser process.

Do I have to fix the wood to the working area?

No, you don't need to fix wood to the working area in order to laser cut or engrave. The laser doesn't exert any pressure on the wood during the process, so you don't have to clamp or fix the material in place. Simply insert the piece of wood you wish to work with and start the laser process. When milling wood, the boards must be clamped in position and must often be fixed by a vacuum. The laser process saves both time and money.

Trotec laser marking systems perform high quality marking on wood, working at high speed. Various information such as barcodes, data matrix codes, serial numbers and logos of all kinds can be applied by the laser.

Flexible and safe

Trotec laser marking systems represent total flexibility. Whether individual pieces or a series – tool-free technology is the first choice even with batch size 1. Trotec laser systems are also safe. Hot branding stamps or other dangerous mechanical tools from the wood processing industry are a thing of the past.

User-friendly software

Trotec software makes it easy to import the data to be applied. It also has a barcode and data matrix generator.

Marking protects against plagiarism

Laser marking turns valuable products into unmistakable individual items. Premium manufacturers use Trotec laser marking to apply their logos or various security codes to their products.

Product piracy is effectively prevented, as plagiarism is quickly and easily identified – only the original is traceable and perfectly recognised.

Extraction system for durability

Combining your laser system with a suitable extraction system provides you with the best equipment for marking wood. Sensitive parts are optimally protected from dust to ensure the long life of your Trotec laser system, even with applications that incur a great deal of dust
